Online poker site PokerStars.com has announced that its World Championship Of Online Poker (WCOOP) will return today with $15 million in guaranteed prize money.
The WCOOP runs from today until September 30 and is the largest tournament series held online and one of the largest poker series of any type in the world.
The Isle Of Man-registered site said that the prizes offered get bigger each year. For the inaugural event in 2002, ‘MultiMarine’ of Sweden won $65,450 in the main championship event. In 2003, ‘DeOhGee’ won $222,750 in the main event while that amount had gone up to $424,945 for ‘Ragde’ the next year. ‘Panella86’ won the championship event and took home $577,342 in 2005 while last year saw professional player JC Tran win the WCOOP main event bracelet, beating a field of 2,510 players, and pocket more than $600,000.
Last year, PokerStars.com hosted 18 events and guaranteed $10 million before eventually awarding over $18.5 in prizes. This year, there will be 23 events culminating in the Hold ‘Em Main Event with a buy-in of $2,600 and a guaranteed prize of five million dollars.
Once again, PokerStars.com is hosting the NLHE Triple Shootout last held in WCOOP 2005 alongside two new games, a five-card draw and a two to seven triple draw.
