Day 1b at the EPT San Remo saw the stars of the game settle down to do what they do best – play poker. The field included superstars such as Daniel Negreanu, Lee ‘Final Table’ Nelson, Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier, Todd Brunson and Chad Brown.
With 361 players entering on Day 1b joining the 341 from Day 1a, a total field of 702 entrants generated a first-place prize of $1,340,867.
The tournament was forgettable for Chad Brown, as he was eliminated just before the first break. Joining him on the rail a little earlier than they would have liked were Isabelle Mercier and Marco Traniello. Mercier’s kings were busted when her opponent flopped the nuts on a J-9-8 board. The French dame missed her runner-runner outs, and exited for the streets of San Remo.
Others who were eliminated on Day 1b included EPT Prague champion Arnaud Mattern, Lee Nelson, Thierry van den Berg and Tony G. Tony G managed to find himself short stacked early in proceedings, and had begun to pick up some momentum by stealing the blinds and antes a couple of times per orbit. Eventually he was looked up when his opponent called G’s Kc-Qc with pocket fours. A queen on the flop was the nailed in Tony’s coffin, and turn and river bricked.
Anthony Lellouche won a big pot against Antonio Esfandiari to propel himself to the top of the chip standings at the end of the day. Max Pescatori also finished well, with a double up close to the end of the day’s play. He managed to get his stack into the middle with pocket kings, his opponent being left out to dry with K-Q offsuit.
Other notables who made it through Day 1b included Todd Brunson and Juha Helppi. Both players ended the day in an aggressive mood, accumulating a lot of chips when perhaps some around them were already looking forward to getting through to Day 2.
Day 1b chip leaders look like this:
Anthony Lellouche – 94,000
Jan Heitmann – 92,000
Roberto Romanello – 83,000
Mads Wissing Andersen – 82,000
