Poker’s Elite Honour Brunson’s 40th WSOP

Poker’s Elite Honour Brunson’s 40th WSOP

Tuesday, 14 July 2009

The day before registration opened for the 40th annual World Series of Poker $10,000 Main Event, players and poker fans flocked to the Wynn nightclub to pay homage to one of poker’s greats – Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson was about to play his 40th WSOP.

Brunson recounted stories of his youth, playing poker illegally in the 1950s. “Now everyone knows what I knew then,” he said. “Poker is the greatest game that there is.”

Brunson has won 10 WSOP bracelets in his careers but he says that the days of winning the Main Event are behind him. “It would be very difficult for me to win now. I have a bull’s-eye on me, and everyone wants to beat me. So, if I am not real lucky, I have to jump too many hurdles.”

But the top poker pros disagree with Brunson. “Not only can he still play competitively, he is still among the best in the world,” said Daniel Negreanu. “And in some senses, he is even better now, because Doyle learns something new every day.”
