Poker pro husband of reality TV winner jailed

Of all the programmes on TV at the moment perhaps the least likely one you'd expect to find a poker related link was The Great British Bake Off.

It transpires that the winner of the amateur baking contest, Jo Wheatley, is married to a professional poker player who has been jailed for his part in a £60m money laundering scam. Richard 'The Bear' Wheatley, was given a seven year sentence in April last year after admitting conspiracy with others to conceal, convert and transfer proceeds of crime, allegedly in connection with money related to drug trafficking.

Wheatley was a regular on the tournament circuit with some impressive performances listed on his Hendon Mob database entry, most notably a $60,000 score in the 2008 888.com UK Open and a win in the £500 GUKPT Grand Final, also in 2008, for £26,250.

The contest winner, Jo Wheatley, was up front with show producers about her husband's current status, saying that she “didn't want to use it as some X Factor–style sob story.” And having seen the pleading from some of this year's X Factor performers we should all be grateful for that.
