A woman en route to Las Vegas to play in a poker tournament had £100,000 worth of jewellery stolen from the hold of the plane she was travelling in.

Rita Lamberg was heading with her partner from New York to Las Vegas via Phoenix and was told by airline staff that her bag was too large to be classed as hand baggage. According to a report in The Daily Telegraph, the 69-year-old persuaded US Airways staff to let her take the bag on board after revealing that it contained jewellery worth $160,000 but shortly before take off, an airline worker told her that the bag had to be put in the hold.

After arriving in Phoenix for the connecting flight to Vegas, Ms Lamberg collected her bag from the luggage carousel but found that a Rolex watch, diamond ring set and another diamond ring with blue sapphires had disappeared.

“We take this very seriously and are investigating with law enforcement” an airline spokesman told The Telegraph.

Ms Lamberg has put up a $10,000 reward for the recovery of the missing items.
