Poker player accused of murdering his wife in America is refused bail

Tuesday, 2 February 2010

Professional poker player Marcus Bebb-Jones, who is wanted in America accused of killing his wife, has been refused bail after a hearing at the High Court.

Bebb-Jones, who is currently living in Kidderminster, is alleged to have killed his wife, Sabrina, in Colorado in 1997.

The judge at the hearing at the High Court in London ruled that there was “a significant risk” that Bebb-Jones would abscond if given bail. Bebb-Jones’s defence team, headed by Ben Cooper requested bail as he faces a lengthy extradition process that could run for months.

A lifetime in prison awaits if Bebb-Jones is found guilty of murdering his wife. Colorado District Attorney Martin Beeson has agreed not to seek the death penalty though. Full extradition proceedings are set to begin on Thursday.

Bebb-Jones, a successful player on the UK circuit with a number of wins to his name, including a £90,000 score in the 2007 Grosvenor Grand Prix, was arrested last year after a warrant was issued by US law enforcement authorities.
