Poker has not been immune to the annual jape fest that is April Fool’s Day. Plenty of stories about massive strip poker tournaments, naked marches on Congress over the banning of online gaming and a trillion dollar prize online (how is this even believable? The national debt runs at about the same level!) have left people wondering what to believe. But it seems that one stands out from the rest, largely because it appears to have an element of truth about it.
Canadian John Turmel, a pro poker player and advocate of marijuana for medicinal purposes has been given a C$1,000 fine and 100 hours community service for possession of the drug, which was apparently being trafficked to former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien. The idea was apparently a protest about other weed fans being prosecuted for possession of small amounts. The fact that his fine was so minimal should mean he’ll have no trouble winning it back at the table or just online during a free afternoon.
