Beyond the simple fact that winning the WPT World Championship is likely to bolster the winner’s bank balance and give them the kudos of having won one of the world’s most prestigious poker tournaments, this year’s tourney will also decide the Poker Player of the Year award.
Currently, Gavin Smith is atop the rankings, but he’ll have to be at the top of his game when the WPT rolls into the Bellagio, Las Vegas for the championship on April 18. Smith is being hunted down by Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, who is just 400 points behind Smith on 1700 having won the Borgata Poker Classic and come in second at the Jack Binion Poker Open. Smith will also be hoping that Alan Goerhing doesn’t place well at the WPT Champs as he’s lurking nearby in third place and has a string of good results behind him.
If ‘The Grinder’ is to take the title then he needs to finish in fourth place or higher and hope that Smith doesn’t make the top seven. It promises to be a killer end to the fourth WPT season, with the race likely to go right down to the wire.
