According to the annual “top 50” list of search terms published by search Engine, Lycos, people searched for “poker” more than any other word in 2006.
An improvement on last year’s third place, poker beat MySpace (2), Pamela Anderson (4), Paris Hilton (5), golf (8) and more to snatch the top spot on the prestigious list.
Widely recognised in the industry as a measure of the fads sweeping the world, poker seems to have surpassed expectations with a lengthy presence in the top 10 over the last three years. Only busty blondes Pamela Anderson and Paris Hilton have stayed there longer.
Lycos bosses named poker as the top fad of 2004, 2005, and 2006 despite its continued appearance in the top 50 for over 50 weeks, rendering it one of a handful of terms in the second tier of the “Lycos Elite.”
Additionally, poker also came out on top in the toys and games category for the second year running. It seems the big kids have outdone their children, with more people searching for poker chip sets or tables during the holiday period than iPods, Barbies, or PlayStations.
