Poisonous cards in Taiwan

Poisonous cards in Taiwan

Wednesday, 2 February 2011

Poker players in the Far East could be risking more than their bankroll by playing poker after a study found decks of cards containing the potentially lethal chemical formaldehyde.

Scientists revealed that five out of 30 packs tested contained more than the legal levels of the chemical permitted by the government. The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection, which carried out the study, estimates that as many as 17% of cards on the market are affected. The problem is especially acute at the moment as playing cards are a popular gift at Chinese New Year.

Officials have called on manufacturers to recall the offending items with those unwilling to being hit with hefty fines.

It certainly gives a whole new meaning to being dealt a poisonous hand.
