Phil Ivey wins WSOP Asia-Pacific mixed event

Wednesday, 10 April 2013

While the mixed event at the ongoing World Series Of Poker (WSOP) Asia-Pacific tournament series might not have attracted the masses, it did welcome the elite of the poker world looking for a slice of success in a niche event.

The third event of the WSOP Asia-Pacific began earlier today with a final table of six in the hunt for the $51,480 top prize. While he started the day as one of the favourites, Daniel Negreanu eventually hit the rail in fourth place in a round of pot-limit Omaha.

After flopping a flush draw on an Ac-Tc-4h flop, Negreanu committed all of his chips but couldn’t spike the required cards to overcome the two pair of Brandon Wong.

As Negreanu was counting his $16,336 consolation prize, Graeme Putt was the next to fall leaving iconic American professional Phil Ivey to battle it out with Wong for the bracelet. After falling behind, Ivey began to assert his dominance in the 2-7 triple draw round.

With the momentum slowly swinging away from Wong, an ace on the river left him virtually crippled and in need of some luck. Unfortunately, as Ivey revealed a T-9-8-3-2 low, Wong’s superior draw faded thanks to a queen on the river. That pot brought the match to a conclusion and left Ivey to stand alone as the latest WSOP Asia-Pacific champion with a ninth career bracelet.

While the final few pros were mixing it up in this event, the $5,000 no-limit handed six maximum tournament continued to close in on a final table. Having welcomed 167 players, a total of eleven are now left.

Final standings of AUD$2,200 buy-in mixed event:

1. Phil Ivey AUD$51,840

2. Brandon Wong AUD$32,039

3. Graeme Putt AUD$22,427

4. Daniel Negreanu AUD$16,336

5. Robert Campbell AUD$12,020

6. Kevin Song AUD$8,978
