Phil Hellmuth wins LA Poker Classic 8-game event plus side bet

Thursday, 1 March 2012

While amateur Sean Jazayeri was winning the LA Poker Classic Main Event, the side events rolled on with 72 players entering the $2,000 8-game championship. At the end of the day it was none other than Phil Hellmuth who stood victorious.

Hellmuth proved he can compete in games other than Hold’em at the WSOP last year, with runner-up finishes in 2-7, Stud 8 and 8-game events. This, however, is amazingly his first live tournament victory since 2007.

Though the $22,000 he won after a four-handed chop is by far not his biggest cash, Hellmuth will no doubt be pleased to win a tournament, especially one that continues to prove he is a force in mixed games.

In addition, 25 players entered a $1,000 last longer bet, which was also chopped at the final table with Hellmuth taking home an additional $10,700.
