Phil Gordon has Lady Luck to thank for his Thanksgiving Day victory in the FullTilt.Net Championship at the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas yesterday.
Gordon's aggressive play meant that he sent six other contenders packing during the four-hour live broadcast on FSN. Critics have commented that with this win, Gordon has proved that he is one of the most under-rated professionals on the Team Full Tilt roster of players.
Amongst the pros Gordon annihilated to win $600,000 for his first place finish were recent European Poker Tour winner and World Poker Tour title-holder Roland De Wolfe and four-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner and Main Event fourth place finisher, Allen Cunningham.
Indeed, Gordon faced De Wolfe in heads-up play, starting with a small chip lead and continuing to increase the pressure on the European superstar. Gordon developed a slight edge by winning a number of small pots only to see De Wolfe made a quick run, take down several pots, and the chip lead.
In the end, both players went all-in and Gordon’s ace-seven offsuit proved to be too much for De Wolfe’s six-nine suited. Neither player’s hand improved, giving Gordon the win and the $600,000 first-place prize. De Wolfe took home a still sizable $250,000.
