Peter Harkes wins Unibet Open Riga

Monday, 5 December 2011

While most attention was focused on the WPT event in Prague and the GUKPT Grand Final in London there was the small matter of over €400,000 up for grabs in the final leg of the 2011 Unibet Open series in Riga.

Peter Harkes had most reason to cheer, outlasting a 308 runner field in the Latvian capital to take home a prize of just over €90,000. The Dutchman is no stranger to the latter stages of the Unibet Open, having reached the final table at the recent event in Dublin. The Ajax fan went even better this time, instigating a string of final table eliminations before defeating Poland's Arkadiusz Olszowy heads up.

Harkes went into two-handed play with a nine to one chip lead and it looked like it was going to be all over on the opening hand with Harkes holding K9 and Olszowy Q9 on a 2d2h9s5h board. An ace on the river brought a chop and offered a stay of execution for the veteran. It didn't last long though with the Dutch youngster sealing victory after flopping a straight to beat the Pole's top pair.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1 Peter Harkes €90,073
2 Arkadiusz Olszowy €61,218
3 Maksim Martynov €41,850
4 Jarkko Mamela €30,837
5 David Janssen €24,228
6 Vytautas Milvydas €18,942
7 Loek van Wely €15,418
8 Rytis Grunovas €13,679
9 Ricardo Klaassen €11,892
