Pensioner pulls Armenian doomswitch

Wednesday, 13 April 2011

We've all heard the more excitable elements on Internet chat rooms talk about a mythical doom switch that guarantees that their seemingly invincible hand loses (usually in a $2 sit and go or something equally small).

Well online poker players in Armenia could be forgiven for thinking that the fictional entity actually exists after a Georgian woman inadvertently cut off internet access to the whole country. The 75-year-old from Tbilisi had been scavenging for copper cable and accidentally cut through a fibre optic cable causing a five hour online blackout.

According to a report in The Guardian, the woman, dubbed 'the spade hacker', is being investigated on suspicion of damaging property and faces up to three years in prison if charged and convicted.
