Paul Valkenburg wins Unibet Open London

Wednesday, 8 December 2010

Paul Valkenburg has been crowned Unibet Open London champion. The Dutchman pocketed £109,950 after outrunning a 273 runner field that included such high profile luminaries as James Akenhead , Praz Bansi , Neil Channing , JP Kelly , Toby Lewis and Ludovic Lacay .

Valkenburg went into the final table as one of the medium stacks and avoided any major confrontations early on but gained momentum after making a great call with K10 against the then chip leader Simeon Naydenov's K6.

The Dutchman needed a bit of luck en route to victory and it came when his KcJd came from behind to beat the Naydenov's AhQh to take down a monster pot with play three handed. Valkenburg sealed the win soon after, his AK dominating Yordan Mitrentsov's AJ. The Bulgarian couldn't escape the cooler and was forced to settle for £72,685 for his runner up finish.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1 - Paul Valkenburg, £109 550
2 - Yordan Mitrentsov, £72 685
3 - Simeon Naydenov, £48 115
4 - Kirit Patel, £28 665
5 - Johnny Hansen, £21 705
6 - Rene Freymann, £17 610
7 - Pantelis Pavlis, £13 515
8 - Dimitar Danchev, £10 240
9 - Jose Besalduch Traiguero, £7 780

The Unibet Open returns in March next year with a stop in Malta. Another event in Dublin has also been scheduled for August.
