Millionaire businessman and high stakes poker enthusiast, Paul Phua, isn't a member of the criminal organisation the 14K Triads. That's the testimony submitted by Malaysia's Minister of Home Affairs, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, after being asked for an account of Phua's character by the FBI.

Back in July Malaysian native Phua was part of a group that was arrested after the US authorities suspected it was running an illegal World Cup sports betting operation from rooms inside Caesars Palace, Las Vegas.

Since that time the wealthy poker player has been fighting his corner and earlier this week he received some help from the Malaysian government.

"To assist both your department and Mr. Phua’s legal teams, based on our information, Mr. Phua is neither a member nor is he associated with the 14K Triad. Moreover, according to our records, Mr. Phua has on numerous occasions assisted the government of Malaysia on projects affecting our national security and accordingly we continue to call upon him to assist us from time to time, and as such we are eager for him to return to Malaysia," Hamidi wrote.

Although the letter won't exonerate Phua from the charges levelled against him, it will certainly improve his long-term legal EV in the case.
