The poker calendar is packed nowadays, with EPT, WSOP and WPT events all year round. The one thing that us European poker players are used to though is the Irish Poker Championship, with the January tournament often the first event in the calendar year. 2009 will be no different, and the big names should be in attendance once again.

There is one change to proceedings though, after sponsors Party Poker announced a new land-based tour of eight qualifying events. The first leg will be held in Waterford at the Tower Hotel at the end of August, with seven more qualifiers running over the rest of the year, all designed as feeders into the 2009 Irish Poker Championship itself.

With previous versions of the IPC having drawn some of the biggest names in poker, it’s good to see the list has already begun for the 2009 event, with Padraig Parkinson, Len Collin, Nicky Power, Ivan Donaghey, Rory Liffey, Mick McClosky, Paul Lecky, 2008 IPC champion Ainsworth and Keith McFadden all confirmed for the event.
