Party Poker World Open – We have a winner

Saturday, 11 September 2010

2010 has been a memorable year for Sam Trickett. The young Brit had some great results at the World Series and has been prolific in the cash games as usual. He now has a title to celebrate after winning the Party Poker World Open yesterday.

Trickett was one of seven finalists who gathered at the Palm Beach casino in Mayfair to battle it out for the $200k first prize. Poker in the Park lecturer Andrew Robl was the first to go when his 9s over queens full house ran into Toby Lewis's quad queens. John Duthie hit the rail soon after followed by Juha Helppi and Toby Lewis which left Trickett heads up with former WPT Championship winner Yevgeniy Timoshenko.

The Englishman dominated heads up proceedings, his constant aggression and three-betting causing Timshenko plenty of headaches. In his article on Wednesday Matt Perry wrote about the importance of history, meta game and game flow and it certainly applied in this encounter. Trickett, holding second pair on an ace high board somehow managed to get Timoshenko to throw away his A5 with an outrageous all in river bet.

He sealed the deal next hand and again it was a corker. The Ukrainian born American opened from the button with Ah4h and Trickett holding 10c9c made the call. The Ac5c10h guaranteed action and so it proved with Trickett betting out 30,000, Timoshenko raising to 74,000 and the Englishman making the call. A 2h on the turn prompted a check from Trickett. Timoshenko raised 67,000 and again Trickett called. The 9d on the river gave Trickett two-pair which he checked. Timoshenko raised 85,000 and Trickett announced all in, just like he'd done on the previous hand. This time Timoshenko made the call and that was that. The Nottingham native could celebrate his first title.

Trickett pocketed $200,000 with Timoshenko taking $110,000 for second

The last word should go to Party Poker ambassador Mike Sexton who said, “He’s one helluva player, and you’ll be hearing a lot more of Sam Trickett, I can promise you that.” Here at Bluff Towers we whole heartedly agree.
