Padraig Parkinson wins UKIPT opener

Padraig Parkinson wins UKIPT opener

Tuesday, 15 December 2009

If PokerStars could have chosen a winner in advance for its debut UKIPT event in Galway then it’s likely that Padraig Parkinson would have been near the top of the list of candidates.

High profile, popular and never short of a decent quote he’s just what you want from a top quality pro and he lived up to that billing in Galway, taking down the UKIPT Main Event for a score of €125,000 plus a seat in EPT London worth £5,000.

The former Late Night Poker winner beat long time chip leader Paul Marrow in a swift heads up encounter to seal the title. The key hand saw Parkinson’s Ace Queen win a race against Marrow’s pocket 6s. The end came soon after with Marrow’s 2-5 unable to overcome the Irishman’s King Queen. Marrow had to settle for €82,500 for his runners up finish.

Speaking after the event the newly crowned Irish champion said, “'I was born just down the road so I can't believe that I won it. If anyone wants a drink, I'm buying!'

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Padraig Parkinson €125,000 (+£5,000 EPT qualifier)
2. Paul Marrow €82,000
3. Ben Lefew €52,000
4. Michael Graydon €36,000
5. Michael McFadgen €22,000
6. Paul Dooley €17,000
7. Vinny Cosgrove €13,000
8. Cat O'Neill €11,000
9. Trevor Bulless €9,000

The UKIPT caravan heads to Manchester for the next leg in February. Satellites are already up and running on PokerStars.
