According to reports in a Finnish newspaper, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health are looking to introduce an amendment to the gambling laws in the country which would give Internet gamblers the ability to claim back their losses.
It is unclear who would reimburse losing gamblers, but the suggestion is it could the firm offering the online service, the credit card company, or indeed the winning player in the game. The aim from the ministry’s perspective would be to have foreign companies refuse Finnish players from using their site.
The attempt follows as a result of a study by the University of Joensuu, who were commissioned by the ministry to look into ways to protect gambling addicts and children from potentially dangerous online gambling. The University didn’t specify in it’s report how the legislation would be enforced, and it is believed the difficulties the law would present has forced the ministry to consider ideas on the proposal.
The talk of a ban follows on from the Germans implementing a similar ban on New Years Day, a move which has been challenged by both the European Union and companies from within the country.
