Norway implements online poker payment ban

Norway implements online poker payment ban

Friday, 4 June 2010

It wasn't just America that saw legislation banning financial transactions regarding online gaming come into effect on 1st June. The authorities in Norway have taken a similarly draconian route.

The Scandinavian nation has become the first in Europe to legally block financial transactions between online gaming companies and their customers. The Oslo government has cited potential fraud and gambling addiction as the principle reasons for the ban. At present only Norske Tipping and Rikstoto are exempt from the ban.

Though not a member of the European Union, Norway is subject to the rulings of the European Free Trade Association which has expressed its displeasure at the move. A challenge to the Norwegian law could be in the offing.
