In America, a self-employed owner and manager of investment real estate defeated a field of 136 players to win the Heartland Poker Tour on Sunday.
Mark Sandness woke up at four o’clock in the morning to make the four-hour drive to Walker, Minnesota, to take part in the event and survived 21 hours of poker to win $53,199. He was also awarded a $3,000 Heartland Poker Tour Championship Open Tournament seat package.
Held at the northern American state’s Northern Lights Casino, the event’s prize pool totalled $192,000 and featured a televised live final. Lawrence Barbetta finished in second place and walked away with $26,600 while third place finisher Joe Big Bear won $17,100. David Baxter won $13,300 for finishing fourth and fifth place finisher Ray Babb received $11,400. The first to go out at the televised final table, James Mutchler, walked away with $9,500.
“The final table was really a grind but it was fun,” said Sandness. “They were all good players and really good guys.”
The next stop for the Heartland Poker Tour is scheduled for the Golden Gates Casino in Black Hawk, Colorado, with qualifiers beginning on October 1 with the main event being held from October 12 to 14. Due to Colorado law, players will not be allowed to buy into the main event directly but must obtain entry through a qualifier.
