No doubting Thomas as Bichon wins WPT Cyprus

French professional Thomas Bichon is the toast of Cyprus tonight after winning the first ever WPT Cyprus. The 32-year-old from Bastia collected a first prize of $579,165, a WPT bracelet and the honour of being the first player to win an international event on the Mediterranean island.

After the early elimination of chip leader Rony Jazzar and Estonian pro Janar Kiivramesm, play settled down somewhat before exploding to life after three hours with a hand that defined the tournament. With blinds at 50,000/100,000 Bichon butted heads with fellow chip leader and tournament favourite Rep Porter. The Frenchman opened the betting, Porter re-raised and Bichon called. The flop brought 5c3c9s. Bichon bet out, Porter, holding Qc10c pushed and Bichon called revealing two red nines for top set. The turn and river didn’t bring the required flush for the American and Bichon could nurse a monster stack.


The Frenchman soon put that chip advantage to good use knocking out Steve Fung with an unlikely Jack high holding and then seeing off heads up opponent Uri Keidar in just two hands. The chips went in with Bichon holding pocket 7s racing with Keidar’s J10. The flop brought a seven to give the Corsican a set and his biggest win as a professional.
