Nicholas Newport wins Irish Winter Festival

Tuesday, 26 October 2010

18 players returned to the Burlington Hotel in Dublin yesterday for the conclusion of the Irish Winter Festival Main Event and with the clock nearing midnight it was Nicholas Newport who sealed the deal.

Newport went into the final day in the middle of the chip counts but with plenty of skill and a little bit of luck worked his way to a three-way showdown with Charlie Harvey and Tom Finneran. The trio made a deal, agreeing that the second and third place finishers should get the same money, before playing on for the win.

Finneran busted out just after the deal was struck, his K2 unable to overturn Newport's pocket fives. Newport kept the momentum going at the start of heads up play, winning a string of small pots against Charlie Harvey. All the chips went in soon after on a K-2-6 board with two spades on show. Harvey flipped over two pair but Newport, with a flush draw, had plenty of outs. A queen on the turn helped neither player but a non-pairing four of spades gave Newport the flush, the title and first prize of €125,000.

Newport's win is the latest in a string of good tournament results. The Irishman pocketed €10,000 after winning the Irish Series of Poker Main Event in Waterford in July and also had a deep run at the Irish Poker Festival in Killarney earlier this month.
