With online gambling’s huge growth of late, the need for government initiatives across the globe to try and curb problem gambling has become imperative. In the US it’s a simple case of Congress trying to ban gambling outright and infuriate millions of Americans in the process, but South Australia the regional government are considering a more controlled, but still controversial approach.
The new gambling minister, Paul Caica, has resurrected an old idea of introducing a “smartcard system” that tracks the habits of problem gamblers and limits the amount they can play. Short of the state spending a fortune on rehab, it seems like the way to go. Caica says the aim is to make the gambling industry in South Australia “more responsible”. Refreshing to hear these words rather than “wholly illegal”, which is how some congressmen would like to see gaming these days.
