New Poker bill set for California

Tuesday, 26 February 2013

Online poker could soon be up for debate in California after State Senator Jose Luis Correa introduced new legislation.

Senate Bill 678 would see the Golden State legalise intra-state online poker and establish a regulatory framework for the licensing of iGaming operators by the California Gambling Control Commission.

“The Gambling Control Act provides for the licensure of certain individuals and establishments that conduct controlled games as defined and for the regulation of these gambling activities by the California Gambling Control Commission,” reads the introduction of Senate Bill 678.

“The Department of Justice has related investigatory and enforcement duties under the act. Any violation of these provisions is punishable as a misdemeanour as specified.

“This bill would authorise the operation of Internet poker websites within the borders of this state. The bill would require the Commission to establish a regulatory framework for the licensure of eligible entities and the operation of Internet poker websites within the borders of the state.”

This latest legislation is the second poker related bill up for consideration by California legislators. Corea's fellow Democrat California State Senator Roderick Wright introduced late last year.
