Michael Ellis, a former investment banker, won the GUKPT grand final last weekend, beating Sami Yusuf to lift the £207,000 first-place prize for a London one-two. The tournament saw 199 sign up, generating a total prize pool of £594.000.
Until this win Ellis’ biggest cash had been £14,510. He wasn’t amongst the favourites coming into the final table after he started the day with a below-average stack. However, by the time Ellis got heads-up with Yusuf he has a two-to-one chip lead. It wasn’t plain sailing for Ellis though after he lost a massive 2 million chip pot, putting Ellis back on the defensive.
Ellis chipped away at Yusuf methodically to regain the chip lead, and the final hand saw a classic coin-flip scenario develop with all the chips getting in the middle and Ellis holding A-K to Yusuf’s Q-Q.
In keeping with the see-saw battle between the two, Yusuf hit the flop hard when it came Q T 8, giving Yusuf top set. Ellis wasn’t wincing for two long though, after one of his four Jacks arrived on the turn, giving him the gutshot straight. The river was a harmless six, and Ellis won the title, as well as an extra £10,000 added by the sponsors Blue Square, and a seat to next year’s Grand Final.
