Mel Judah Wins Aussie Millions Omaha Hi/Lo Event

Wednesday, 14 January 2009

Mel Judah won AU$30,600 for taking down Event #3 of the Aussie Millions $1,100 Fixed Limit Omaha Hi/Lo. However, since (as any player will tell you) limit O8 is the slowest game known to man it worked out as about $2/hr.

OK, that was an exaggeration; the man earned exactly $1,800 an hour for his 17-hour marathon in the event. The split-pot structure coupled with the fixed betting system meant that 102 players weren’t going anywhere fast.

Judah beat a field of pros including Tony G, Aussie Millions Main Event Champion Alexander Kostritsyn and Russian rising star Ivan Demidov. He came to the final table as second in chips and reached the heads-up stage with a 4-1 chip deficit.

However he bested Rainer Quel and won a key pot when chips were nearly even. Typically of Omaha, Judah held the nut flush while Quel held the second-nut flush that he just couldn’t lay down. This crippled him and he shoved the rest of his money with AK86. Judah called with KK33 and turned a full house to seal the tournament and the $30,600 prize.
