Matusow Wins NBC Heads-Up

Monday, 28 January 2013

It’s the story that barely needs reporting on thanks to the propensity of this year’s winner to shout about his achievements.

However, if you’ve haven’t been within earshot of the poker community this weekend you’ll not know about Mike Matusow’s victory in this year’s NBC Heads-Up Championship title.

“The Mouth” managed to overcome a 64 player field of highly rated pros, eventually defeating Phil Hellmuth in a closely fought final.

The $750,000 win was one of the largest of Mike’s career and a welcome break for someone who’s seen his tournament travels hindered by Black Friday due to the loss of a sponsor.

On his way to taking down an emotional fuelled finale, Mike beat some top players, including Viktor “Isildur1” Blom and Scott Seiver.

Speaking to PokerStrategy.com after the match, Mike said: “Yes, it is just a poker tournament, but it means a lot. For guys like me and Phil, where everyone was making fun and upset that the final was us two, 'Oh Phil and Mike, what are they doing in the final?' You know what, we are the old guys, but where are the young players? They're not here. We are.”
