Matt Graham wins WSOP Event #40 – World Championship $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha

Wednesday, 24 June 2009

It may not have been a chip and a chair but as comebacks go Matt Graham’s was one to remember. At one stage of heads up play, Graham faced a nine to one chip deficit to two-time bracelet winner Vitaliy Lunkin. After doubling up three times the 25-year-old finally sealed the deal after his set of tens held up against Lunkin’s gutshot straight and flush draw.

Commenting on his comeback Graham said “I was thinking I was just going to continue playing my best. No matter how good you play, it was a long shot in that situation. So, you just have to do all that you can to come back and hope the cards cooperate.”

This win was Graham’s second Lazarusesque comeback at the WSOP. He came back from an eight to one chip deficit when winning his first bracelet against Jean-Robert Bellande last year.

The 25-year-old outlasted a stacked final table that included Barry Greenstein, Josh Arieh and England’s Robin Keston to collect the first prize of $679,402. Padraig Parkinson also went deep, finishing in 14th place for a $46,225 score.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1 Matt Graham $679,379
2 Vitaliy Lunkin $419,832
3 Van Marcus - $278,409
4 Robin Keston - $196,994
5 Ferit Gabriellson - $148,439
6 Stefan Mattson - $118,463
7 Josh Arieh - $99,856
8 Richard Austin - $88,681
9 Barry Greenstein - $82,746
