Markus Sippe wins Boyle Poker International Poker Open

Tuesday, 20 October 2009

Luxembourg based German Markus Sippe has won the International Poker Open in Dublin. Organisers were hoping for a record-breaking field and so it proved as 1,440 players took their seats, making it the biggest poker tournament ever held outside the USA.

Among the field were big names Neil Channing, Padraig Parkinson, Surinder Sunar, Marty Smith and Andrew Black. None could match Markus Sippe though. Sippe, who was born in Germany but currently lives in Luxembourg, started the final table 3rd in chips and steadily built up his stack to set up a heads up clash with home favourite Jaye Renehan. The action was short and sweet heads up with all the chips going in after just ten minutes. Renehan pushed with 54, Sippe called with a dominating A4. A flop that brought a straight draw gave the Irishman some hope but there was to be no miracle finish. Sippe collected $62,250 for his first place finish with Renehan forced to settle for $47,490.

Paul Spillane of Boyle Poker said, “This year's International Poker Open was another great success, breaking last year's record by a further 140 players. The event is proving more and more popular every year, among all levels of players. There was a great atmosphere throughout the entire weekend, and everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves at the tables. Once again, the event's success can be attributed to the hard work of everyone on the team, and of course the infectious enthusiasm of those who took part. The IPO has become an unmissable event on any poker lover's calendar, and we are already excited about the next one."

The delighted winner certainly will be, adding, "I hope to come back next year and do even better!".

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Markus Sippe $62,250

2. Jaye Renehan $47,940

3. Mark Troy $33,208

4. Cat O’Neill $24,736

6. Colin Rutherford $16,187

7. Stephen Egan $12,950

8. Sean Venney $9,712
