Mark McCluskey wins Coral British Masters Liverpool

Monday, 12 July 2010

The field may have been small for the latest leg of the Coral British Masters Tour with just 51 players taking part in the Main Event at Leo's Casino in Liverpool but there was still plenty of quality on view.

That quality was exemplified by Mark McCluskey who took the honours, defeating John Cullen after a lengthy two-handed battle. McCluskey looked like he'd sealed the title early in the heads up proceedings holding 7-8 on a 4-5-6-7 board. Cullen, holding pocket tens needed a miracle eight for a split pot and sure enough an 8 appeared on the river for a chop.

Play lasted another hour and a half and was marked by small pot poker with few massive swings. That changed though when McCluskey was dealt pocket 9s and Cullen AK suited. All the chips went in pre flop and the board helped neither player leaving McCluskey to celebrate the victory.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1st Mark McCluskey £9,430
2nd John Cullen £5,610
3rd John Callaghan £4,340
4th...Ron Wilkinson £3,060
5th...Ky Hutchinson £2,040
6th...Brian Martin £1,020

As well as the cash and trophy, McCluskey also wins a seat in the end of season play off where Coral sponsorship packages worth £10,000 and £5,000 will be won.

The Gala Casino in Nottingham is the venue for the next leg of the Coral Tour, running from 30th July until 1st August with further stops in Teesside and Edinburgh in September and October.
