Marc Goodwin looking good at final table EPT Barcelona

Wednesday, 9 September 2009

Marc Goodwin and Asa Smith head the British challenge going into today’s final table at EPT Barcelona. Goodwin, newly sponsored by Littlewoods Poker, is sitting in 2nd place with 3.1m chips, just over 1m behind leader Carter Phillips. Asa Smith, already celebrating his fourth consecutive cash in an EPT event, will be looking for his first big win and with a stack of 1.38m he’s handily placed to do so.

Tournament leader Carter Phillips may be inexperienced but he’s shown some real bravado on his way to the final table, none more so than bluffing Marc Goodwin out of a massive pot as play neared the final table bubble. With over 1m chips in the middle on a 9d-10h-Qd-Ah board the young American pushed a further 700,000 chips into the pot, persuading Goodwin to let his AK go. The former European Player of the Year can’t have expected Phillips to flip over 6c-8c but that’s exactly what he did.

The 20-year-old internet qualifier will be hoping that more moves like that will seal him the €850,000 first prize later today.
