It may have dominated the Sunday papers in Britain last weekend, but stories of England’s best footballer and his penchant for wagering vast sums of money just won’t go away. Manchested United start, Wayne Rooney has been forced to deny claims that he and fellow England striker Michael Owen have fallen out over gambling debts believed to have reached £700,000.
The 20-year-old is rumoured to have become so annoyed with himself for losing his entire bank roll during a game of Texas Hold ‘Em with friends, that he simply threw into the pot the keys to his brand new Chrsyler 300c – promptly losing them to United team mate Phil Bardsley. To be fair to the broad-shouldered youth, the car cost only half of his £50,000 weekly wages, but it’s not the kind of thing that needs to be encouraged at the poker table.
Apparently Rooney was upset that none of his older colleagues had dissuaded him from playing cards and gambling so much. But with a brand new car on offer, not to mention the chance to subsidise already vast pay packets, you can hardly blame them.
