The final Monthly Main Event in its current incarnation took place at the Fox Poker Club over the weekend with 173 runners on hand for the last £300 buy-in tournament.
After two-days of action it was Maksims Uskovs who had the most cause to celebrate. The Russian, who agreed a chop with Neil McCulloch, David McDonagh and Stanimir Milev when the field went four-handed, went to to win the title and with it a first prize of just over £10,000.The defining hand of heads up play saw both players hold two pair but the Russian's pocket aces counterfeited Stanmir’s top two after the bottom card on the board paired. The end came soon after when Uskovs' KJ held to give the Russian a five-figure score.The final table positions and payouts were as follows:1st Maksims Uskovs £10,090 2nd Stanimir Milev £8,800 3rd David Mcdonagh £7,700 4th Neil Mcculloch £7,000 5th Mia Liu £3,635 6th Tim Wong £2,855 7th James Koumis £2,075 8th Marco Vasconcelos £1,555 9th Nicholas Jenkins £1,170 The Fox Poker Club Main Event returns next month as a £400 buy-in tournament. I had quite a tough opening table at the recent GPS in Birmingham, which is unusual so early in the tournament. There were a couple of decent players to my right and also Paul McTaggart (who beat me heads up in last year’s Edinburgh GPS) and another decent player to my left.
I’ve noticed an increased tendency recently among players on forums and in tournaments towards the bubble. They seem to be taking ICM too literally. They seem to be forgetting that the “M” in ICM stands for “model”. Your true equity in bubble situations is not exactly as ICM predicts. I’d like to recap the known shortcomings of the model, and consider some rules of thumb to help with decision making in the heat of battle.
