The Loose Cannon Club in the City of London will host the National Poker League (NPL) UK Open from August 12th. This is the first NPL tournament to be televised outside the US and will be broadcast to over 100 million households worldwide.
“We are extremely pleased that the Loose Cannon Club has partnered with the NPL to host our first international televised poker tournament in Europe” said Sam Riddle, President of NPL’s Television division. “We will be filming throughout the qualifying rounds and producing six one-hour episodes of the UK OPEN.”
After the inaugural event in London it will visit Paris, Monte Carlo, Manila and Toronto before crowning the world champion in Las Vegas in December. The London tournament will feature side games and several tiers of buy-ins before the £2,500 No-Limit Texas Hold’em Main Event with a final table on August 18th.
This publicity and the expected prize pool of £500,000 are expected to attract many professionals. Space for 450 players, a luxurious members lounge and restaurant make the Loose Cannon an excellent venue for cameras and players alike.
Roy Houghton, the club’s director, warned that anyone wanting to participate should register early to be sure of getting a place. In accordance with UK law, everyone must apply for Loose Cannon ‘guest membership’ at least 48 hours before the tournament starts.
If Shannon Elizabeth attends, she will be sure to bring her ID after the security guard at the 2007 Victorian Poker Championship in Australia answered ‘No’ to ‘Do you know who I am?’ And turned her away!
The event will also have side cash games and a silent auction of NPL memorabilia will be held on the 16th of August to raise money for the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital charity.
