Vladimir Geshkenbein wins PKR Heads Up Grand Slam

Sunday, 11 October 2009

Vladimir Geshkenbein has been crowned the PKR Heads Up Grand Slam champion. The Russian navigated his way through a tricky draw, defeating Alex Keating, Brahim Hajji, David Steicke and James Sudworth to set up a final meeting with Juha Helppi.

After a nip and tuck start with neither player gaining a real advantage play exploded into life just before the break. With blinds at 1,000/2,000 Helpii raised 5,000 from the button, Geshkenbein called. Both players checked on the A48 board. The Russian checked the Jd on the turn, Helpii raised 5,000 and Geshkenbein check raised to 26,000. After going into the tank Helppi called. The river was a Qh. Geshkenbein bet out another 26,000 and after much thought the Finn reluctantly folded.

Having built a healthy lead Geshkenbein piled on the pressure, raising Helppi out of a number of pots. The end finally came after Geshkenbein hit a river flush to beat Helppi’s Ace high.

The $120,000 win is the second major success for Geshkenbein this year. The Russian defeated Johnny Chan heads up to win the high roller event at APPT Macau in August for a score of $266,705.

Alec Torelli beat James Sudworth in the third place play off match. Tony G, Ian Frazer, Lex Veldhuis and David Steicke also made the money.

The final payouts were as follows:

1 $120,000 Vladimir Geshkenbein
2 $70,000 Juha Helppi
3 $45,000 Alex Torelli
4 $35,000 James Sudworth
5 $20,000 Tony G
6 $20,000 Ian Frazier
7 $20,000 Lex Veldhuis
8 $20,000 David Steicke
