Phil Laak wins Party Poker World Open V

Friday, 16 October 2009

Phil Laak is the World Poker Open V champion. The Unabomber started the final slowly, seeing his chips drop from a starting stack of 300,000 to 187,000 at one stage but he fought his way back after getting a bit of luck against Luke ‘_fullflush_’ Schwartz. The Irish-born American pushed all in with AJ. Schawartz instantly called with a dominating AQ but a J on the flop doubled Laak up and he was right back in the contest.

Laak then made the first elimination of the final, busting out early chip leader Andy Black. Hall of Famer Mike Sexton followed shortly afterwards after his pocket eights ran into Jan Veit’s kings. With blinds at 20k/40k play settled into shove and fold routine until two big hands clashed in a classic race. Jennifer Tilly’s AJ ran into Veit’s pocket nines. The nines held up and “Mrs” Phil Laak was on her way. The runner up heat qualifier Bodo Sbreszny was the next to go, eliminated by Jan Veit.

It wasn’t to be Luke Schwartz’s day. After losing the big pot with Laak earlier in the day he was unlucky to be knocked out in third place after Jan Veit hit running clubs for a flush.

The key heads up hand saw all the chips go in with Laak holding A8 and Veit A4. The better kicker held up giving The Unabomber a massive chip lead. It was all over shortly after with Laak’s Q9 overcoming Veit’s J8 to seal the trophy and the small matter of $250,000.
