Les Fenton conquers GUKPT Goliath

Tuesday, 28 August 2012

Les Fenton is this year's metaphorical David who has conquered GUKPT Goliath. The 30-year-old outlasted a huge field of 1,954 entries at Coventry's G Casino to walk away with a first prize of £31,210.

Fenton, who started the final day with a healthy chip lead, remained in control throughout, never dropping out of the top two in the chip counts. After Sung yee Hun was eliminated in third place Fenton agreed a chop with Mark Harding that would see both players take home £26,610. The pair played on for the Champion of Champion’s seat and £4,600 that Grosvenor added to the prize pool and it didn't take long to reach a result. Precisely one hand in fact.

Fenton raised, Harding shoved and the architect from St Albans made the call, tabling A10 which was in good shape against Harding's A7. The 8-J-8 board brought chop possibilities but a 9 on the turn and 7 on the river gave Fenton the straight and his biggest live score to date.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1 Les Fenton £31,210
2 Mark Harding £26,610
3 Sung hee Yun £15,000
4 John Caplan £12,000
5 Colin Inskip £9,200
6 Gavin Manley £6,000
7 Philip Froggatt £4,800
8 Jacqueline Burrows £3,740
9 Kris Graham £2,880
