Kim Jagger wins Sheffield leg of the Betfred Ladies’ Poker Tour

Wednesday, 10 June 2009

Kim Jagger, a regular to the Betfred Ladies’ Poker Tour has secured her first victory of the series by bettering an 84 strong field at Napoleons Casino in Sheffield.

Jagger, a Stoke-on-Trent resident, endured a 14 hour marathon before play was stopped during a heads up grind with Wai Kwan Yuen after the 5.30am time limit had been reached. For the first time in three years of the tour’s history a chip count was required to separate the two finalists. With Jagger holding 293,500 of the 504,000 in play she had her opponent clearly covered and took home the £2,980 first prize, booking her seat in the Grand Final in Novemeber.

“It’s absolutely fantastic to have won at last,” said Kim. “The whole day was great. I was on good tables all the way through and I just tried to keep my head.
“It was a fantastic game and very close at the end. It’s nice to take home a trophy that has ‘winner’ on it.”
Kim will be back to take on nine other players in the Grand Final of the series in November, in which a £20,000 poker sponsorship package for 2010, courtesy of Betfred, will go to the overall winner.

“If I won that, it would give me such a good opportunity to play in the big tournaments,” added Kim, who joins previous 2009 leg winners Emily Curzon (London) and Mel Lofthouse (Rotherham) as the three Grand Final qualifiers so far.

The winners of the five remaining legs of this year’s tour will join the trio in the final, as will the player who tops the leaderboard for the most consistent of the non-winners. There will also be a place awarded to the winner of an online satellite tournament on Betfred Poker.

Top of the non-winner leaderboard is Angela Evis, who moved to the top after she added a fifth place to her opening second position in Leeds. In second place sits Sue Adams, third place finisher in last year’s final, who moved up to second spot thanks to a fourth place finish in the Steel City.

The final table of the Sheffield leg finished as follows:

1 Kim Jagger £2,980 + a seat in the Grand Final
2 Wai Kwan Yuen £1,980
3 Kay Hollis £1,480
4 Sue Adams £990
5 Angela Evis £690
6 Somkhuan Harwood £590
7 Chris Evans £500
8 Alyson Chadwick £300
9 Cara-June Moore £220
10 Myra Gaffin £170
