Juan Carlos Mortenson looks for WPT title

Juan Carlos Mortenson looks for WPT title

Wednesday, 3 March 2010

The World Poker Tour $15,000 tournament at the Commerce Casino is winding down to a six-handed final table, with some recognisable names still in the field and moving steadily towards what they hope will be a $1.7m payday.

Juan Carlos Mortenson, known as El Matador and recently reinstated as a Full Tilt Poker pro, is topping the chip counts ahead of Johnny Chan, Annie Duke and Mark “newwhizzle” Newhouse with just a few tables remaining in the tournament.

Mortenson is no stranger to the WPT, with two titles and $6,000,000 in cashes to his name on the circuit. He was the first player to win titles in both the WPT and WSOP when he won the 2001 Main Event for $1.5m. He secured his second bracelet in 2003 and overall has live tournament earnings of over $8.5m.

He needs to watch out for Mark Newhouse though – the tournament assassin has had a string of results including a WPT title. Famously he lost his entire $1.5m bankroll in 2007 before winning the PokerStars Sunday Million for $245,000 and coming back. A $1.7m win here would certainly be a boost to the online player’s bankroll.

Tomorrow, find out who’s at the final table. Join us for updates on the WPT LAPC.
