It started off with 605 competitors and ended with a relative unknown walking away with a multi-million dollar cheque. This year’s World Poker Tour Championship at the Bellagio certainly didn’t disappoint, with the big names falling early and leaving the new kids on the block to show them how it’s done.
The eventual winner, Joe Bartholdi, sat comfortably behind the initial chip leader James Van Alstyne, before slowly building up his chip count and wiping away all comers with aggressive style. He beat off the challenges of Men Nguyen and Davidson Matthew – beating Matthew with a pair of 9s in the final hand. With that, Bartholdi walked away with a massive $3,760,165 and the championship gold bracelet. For his efforts, Matthews took almost $2 million for second place, so it’s doubtful he’ll be feeling too hard done by.
Further down the field, the big story was that of law student Vanessa Rousso who scooped almost $250,000. While her pay cheque should easily cover her tuition fees, it’s a good bet that she’ll be returning to try and improve her position in season five.
