Jim O’Connell wins maiden Coral British Masters Poker Tour event

Tuesday, 19 May 2009

Edinburgh’s Gala Maybury Casino was the venue for the maiden event on the new British Masters Poker Tour. A total of 105 players including WSOP bracelet winner Lawrence Gosney and Irish Open finalist Andrew Bradshaw bought in to the £550 buy in Main Event, which was eventually won by Jim O’Connell.

O’Connell wasn’t the biggest money earner on the night though as a deal was made with five players remaining. Eddie Lundon and Colin McConaghey took £11k and £10k respectively with the other three players Barry Burns, Jim O’Connell and Tom Scanlon taking £7k apiece. This left £1,800 in prize money and a seat in the Masters Play Off (where the winner will take £10,000 sponsorship a deal) up for grabs.

O’Connell came out victorious beating Eddie Lundon in heads up play. The key hand saw all the chips go in with Lundon holding A8 to O’Connell’s A10 on an 8QQ board. The turn was a King to give O’Connell a glimmer of hope and sure enough a Jack appeared on the river for the Broadway straight. The action was completed the next hand with Jim’s QJ holding up against Eddied 63.

The Gala Casino in Leeds is the venue for the second leg of the British Masters Poker Tour from 19th to 21st June. It’s possible to qualify for this, and the rest of the CBMP events via CoralPoker.co.uk.
