Jeff ‘jaffacakes’ Kimber arrived on the scene with a bang last summer after winning the World Heads Up Championship in Barcelona. Now he can add another title to his list of achievements, having won the Walsall leg of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour.
Before players sat down for the final table many would have fancied Peter Charalambous to be the favourite, holding 877,000 in chips compared to Kimber’s 451,000. As they say in tournament poker though, things can change in just one hand, and after some aggressive opening sorties by Kimber, ‘jaffacakes’ started gathering some chips.
The early aggression meant that Nik Persaud decided to make a stand, pushing all in with AQ, only for Kimber to wake up with pocket aces. After Persaud’s elimination in fifth, Kimber was in pole position to win the title, and didn’t slow down his aggression until he had beaten Charalambous heads-up for the title.
Kimber cashed for £83,910, as well as securing his seat in the Champion of Champions event at the end of the season. Charalambous settled for £48,790 after his second place finish.
On top of this win and his World Headsup Championship last summer, Kimber has also made a WPT final table, narrowly missing out on the televised stages of the Shooting Star tournament in Season 4.
The next leg of the GUKPT will be at the Victoria Casino in London, with play running from 3rd-9th March.
