Jason Somerville blogs his way out of the closet

Jason Somerville is well-known in MTT circles as a successful player online, plus in the live arena he has racked up over $1.7 million in cashes including a WSOP bracelet in a $1,000 NL event this past summer.

His latest blog entitled “Real Talk” does not discuss poker but instead discusses how the game allows anyone of any race, colour or religion to compete on an even playing field before revealing that he is gay.

“Of all the diversity and variety that the poker world contains, though, there is a noticeable lack of openly gay poker professionals,” he writes. “Vanessa Selbst is a top tier player, a brilliant woman and an amazing person, but other than her, I’ve never met a single gay professional poker player, nevermind a high profile one.”

Indeed, in poker and all sports, there is a lack of openly gay competitors. “I’ve struggled with how to discuss this,” he said. “[Also] with how to balance my desire for privacy with the fact that I do want to be myself publicly – and the fact that I think it’s overdue for a guy to be open about it in poker.”

Much respect to Jason. We wish him well.
