Jason Mercier wins EPT Champion of Champions

Saturday, 14 May 2011

Jason Mercier beat a who's who of the PokerStars European Poker Tour talent last night to claim the inaugural EPT Champion of Champions event. After navigating his way through a field that included 50 former EPT winners, the 24-year-old beat fellow American Galen Hall heads up to pocket €50,000 worth of tournament buy ins for season 8 of the EPT.

Mercier said, "I'm extremely happy. It was a tough tournament. Really good players came out and, when we got deep, I did think at one point that I was going to bubble it."

Mercier defeated a stacked final table that included the likes of ElkY, Brandon Schaefer and recent EPT Copenhagen winner Michael Tureniec. They all missed the money though with only four of the field getting paid. Sandra Naujoks was the unfortunate bubble girl, busting in fifth space.

Long time chip leader Vicky Coren was unlucky to depart in fourth when here pocket 8s were outdrawn by Galen Hall's K2. €10,000 in tournament buy-ins should provide some consolation for the Guardian columnist though. Max Lykov was the next to go, leaving the two Americans to battle it out for the title.

Mercier was graceful after the win saying that he runs “better than most”.

The prize winners were as follows:

1. Jason Mercier, United States, Team PokerStars Pro, €50,000
2. Galen Hall, United States, €25,000
3. Max Lykov, Russia, Team PokerStars Pro, €15,000
4. Vicky Coren, United Kingdom, Team PokerStars Pro, €10,000

That wraps up the action for season 7 of the EPT. Qualify for season 8 exclusively at PokerStars with a $600 bonus. Sign up here.
