Jason Mercier, Gavin Smith alive and cashing at WPT

Sunday, 31 October 2010

There are now just three tables left in the World Poker Tour Foxwoods World Poker Finals with several big names in the field including previous WPT winners Gavin Smith and Hoyt Corkins. Also alive are Jason Mercier and Sorel Mizzi, who recently won the PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up for a six-figure score.

Mercier is going for a Triple Crown after an EPT win and WSOP bracelet highlighting his tournament career. Interestingly, he and Daniel Negreanu could quite plausibly gain Triple Crowns to join Gavin Smith and Roland de Wolfe in the exclusive club within the next two days.

Chip leader heading into the final 28 is Chris Hunichen who has 714,000 which is good for almost 150 big blinds with the level at 2,500/5,000/500. Josh Arieh is the biggest name in the top five chip counts having racked up 110,000. Today the WPT plays down to a six-handed final table that could potentially make for some great TV.

Though the World Poker Finals have dipped in attendance the prizes are still huge, with almost $600,000 going to the winner of the tournament. With Mercier, Smith and Corkins – who has had a great 2010 – still in the hunt it’s all to play for.
