Jan Skempa wins EPT Prague on home turf

Monday, 7 December 2009

The last EPT stop of 2009 saw 586 players stump up the €5,000 – or qualify for peanuts via PokerStars – to create a huge prize pool and a €682,000 first-place prize. The trophy stayed on Czech soil after local boy Jan Skempa – who made the final table of the EPT Vilamoura, no less – took down the event, defeating Eyal Avitan heads-up to claim it all.

Team PokerStars Pro, Luca Pagano was the rail’s favourite as he sat at his record sixth European Poker Tour final table. Unfortunately he could make nothing of it after running AJ into QQ, leaving in sixth place.

In the final hand, Skampa raised to 450,000 only to see Avitan shove his 4.2m stack into the middle. Skampa snap-called, turning over two red jacks that had his opponent’s J9o in a world of trouble. The king-high board helped neither player, meaning Skampa’s JJ held up to give him the title.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Jan Skampa - €682,000
2. Eyal Avitan - €454,000
3. Stefan Mattsson - €255,000
4. Anthony Roux - €171,000
5. Larry Ryan - €135,000
6. Luca Pagano - €100,000
7. Gustav Ekerot - €71,000
8. Sven Eichelbaum - €55,000
