The WPT Season 5 Player of the Year JC Tran was on the receiving end of a controversial ruling on the opening day of the 2007 World Poker Finals (WPF).
According to live updates from the tournament, the flop came 9 9 5 rainbow, and Tran gets all of the chips in the middle with a player who has preferred to remain nameless. The ‘player’ is on the shorter stack, and when he sees Tran flip J9 for trips, he insta-mucks his hand. The dealer then retrieves the cards from the muck and turns them over, showing A7o.
The turn and river bring an 8 then a 6, giving Tran’s opponent runner-runner straight. Tran is furious at the decision to have the hand reclaimed from the muck, insisting the pot was his from the moment his opponent folded. The floor is then called and rules in favour of the other player, leaving Tran’s demands to see the video tape falling on deaf ears.
Tran may have lost the pot, but he is still in the tournament with about 25,000 chips remaining. Big names out of the tournament so far include Eric Froelich, David Pham, Joe Sebok, Barry Greenstein and Mimi Tran.
